Red Sox farmhands shine out west
11/11/2005
Despite a rough start, the Arizona Fall League might have unearthed a few more quality prospects for the Boston Red Sox organization.
Red Sox farmhand Randy Beam posted a team-best 3.77 ERA for the Peoria Saguaros, while center fielder David Murphy used a strong second half to finish the season with a batting average above .300. Here's how all six Red Sox hopefuls fared over the last six games of the AFL season:
LHP Randy Beam -- The 6-foot-3 lefty saw mixed results in two appearances this week for the Saguaros. He allowed two runs -- one earned -- in an inning of work against Surprise on Nov. 7, but he tossed two innings of one-hit ball on Nov. 9 vs. Grand Canyon. Beam finished the AFL season with a 3.77 ERA -- best on the Saguaros' staff -- and held batters to a .226 average over 14 1/3 innings and nine games.
RHP Jesus Delgado -- Delgado turned in two stellar outings to close out his 2005 AFL campaign, pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings against the Desert Dogs and the Javelinas on Nov. 5 and 8, respectively. Delgado posted a 4.08 ERA over 10 games and 17 2/3 innings.
RF Brandon Moss -- Moss was mired in a 1-for-14 slump before finishing his season strong, going 2-for-3 with a solo homer and two runs scored against Mesa on Nov. 10. The 22-year-old Georgia native finished with a .236 average, two home runs and five RBIs.
CF David Murphy -- Persistence at the plate paid off for Murphy, who finished his AFL season with a .319 batting average after struggling mightily in the first two weeks of the campaign. Selected as Boston's Minor League 2005 Defensive Player of the Year, Murphy went 6-for-14 in his last three games. He went 3-for-5 against Surprise on Nov. 7, when he smacked a double, a home run and scored twice.
RHP Chris Smith -- The 24-year-old righty was effective in his only outing of the week, striking out three batters, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk through five innings against the Javelinas on Nov. 8.
RHP Charlie Zink -- Zink might be glad to leave Arizona after going through a difficult final week for the Saguaros. He was roughed up for five runs on four hits in just one inning against Surprise on Nov. 7, then he gave up another run on a home run to Grand Canyon's Garrett Jones on Nov. 9.
